Jorge I. Martinez-Lopez, M.D. is Professor of Medicine in the Internal Medicine Division, at Paul F. Foster School of Medicine, Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center, at El Paso. He is board certified in both Internal Medicine and in the subspecialty of Cardiovascular Diseases. Prior to coming to PLFSOM, he was Professor of Medicine at LSU Medical Center, and Director of the Cardiology Department, at Charity Hospital of Louisiana, both in New Orleans; he is now Emeritus Professor since 1986. In 1986, he reentered the US Army for a 2-year period as Assistant Chief, Cardiology, at William Beaumont Army Medical Center, El Paso. Dr. Martinez-Lopez retired from the Army in 1988, after 37 plus years of combined active Army Reserve duty and active Army service, with the rank of Colonel. His retirement led to his coming to PLFSOM in November 1988, where he still remains. Dr. Martinez-Lopez has published over 300 peer-reviewed papers, book chapters, and has presented locally, nationally and internationally. Dr. Martinez-Lopez has served as manuscript reviewer for 3 different medical journals. He is recipient of several prestigious civic, professional, and military awards. Currently, he limits his professional time to teaching interpretation of ECGs, Holter recordings and clinical applications of these procedures, to senior medical students, residents and cardiology Fellows. Other teaching responsibilities include: 4 hours a week coach-and-pupil ECG interpretation, 2 hours weekly on informal discussions in electrophysiology and several hours during the year presenting cardiac topics to the Internal Medicine house-staff. Additionally, he is responsible for planning, coordinating, supervising, and executing the periodic presentations and those topics by the cardiology division staff.
